Stevenson Rocks - Classroom Baskets

Every year Stevenson Rocks has baskets from each grade level which will be assembled and auctioned at the event. This year the basket themes for Mrs. Diamonds’s class are:

“That’s Alright With Me” – Mom stuff like…. Spa gift cards, cooking stuff, music, wine, magazines subscriptions, music gift card, cooking class…

“Cadillac Man” – Dad Stuff… Jiffy Lube gift card, air fresheners, Armor All, i-pod attachment, car blanket, first aid kit, travel cups, lottery tickets, Santa Anita Turf passes, movies/CD’s…

The items noted above are simply ideas (please, nothing from the 99¢ Store)…be creative! Maybe you have a special talent that you can offer as a gift certificate (e.g. lawn mowing, gardening, cooking dinner for family, pet or babysitting).

***If you choose to use gift cards, we encourage you to purchase them through Escrip. These can be purchased after school on Fridays. Additional ways to donate can be found online at www.stevensonpirates.net.***

All items must be turned into the office by Friday, April 16th. Please make sure you note Room 5 on your donation.

Room 5 News Week of 3/22/2010

Ms. Diamond's News
Thank you to all of the families that came to Open House! I could see on the children's faces how much that night meant to them. I am so proud of them!

Language Arts News
We have been writing like crazy in room 5! Our science unit on plants was a major writing topic these last two months. Now we are ready to write all about springtime.

Math News
Students have mastered place value (understanding tens and ones) and telling time to the half hour. We have also learned the patterns involved in counting by twos, fives, and tens to 100.

Science/Soc. Studies News
The study of plants has dominated our science unit for the past two months. We have gone on nature walks, pulled weeds, studied plant parts, fruits, vegetables, and watched beans sprout. The students are excited by their new knowledge, and are able to apply it to new experiences in the real world!

Students of the Day/Month
Angelina Lee- responsibility
Jacob Conahan- compassion
Matthew Mahr- self-discipline

Birthdays and Special Days
March 1st- Kaitlin's birthday
April 9th coming up: Field Trip to the Underwood Farm

Art News
We have had the great privilege of having Ms. Barbara Eisner come to our class to teach standard-based art lessons in our class.

Room 5 Wish List
1. We need Ziploc bags! We need sandwich sized, quart sized, and storage sized bags.

2. We need pointers! Our students use these sticks daily, and many have broken. We especially need ones 2-3 feet (24"-36") long. You may order these from Lakeshore or find some cylindrical sticks at a hardware store. :-)

Ms. Diamond's News:
2010 is off to a great start! First graders have been in school for 100 days! Students celebrated by having a 100th day party, where we counted to 100, read books about 100, made equations with 100, played games about 100, and made party mix with food that students brought in. We added 100 cheerios, 100 skittles, 100 apple jacks, 100 rice chex, 100 grapes, 100 banana chips, etc. We had a great time celebrating all the fun and learning that room 5 has done in 100 days.

Students of the Month:
October- Maddie Simpson, for showing cooperation
November- Diego Castellon, for showing Honesty
December- Bella Boulais, for showing generosity

Students of the Day:

Language Arts News:
Power hour has been a huge success. We have been focusing on specific reading skills and strategies with each first grade class, and many students have made such improvement that they have transitioned to a more challenging Power Hours group in order to meet their needs!

Math News:
Students have been moving quickly through our math series, learning about place value, graphing, addition and subtraction, geometry, and telling time! Students can all tell time to the half hour. Please provide your child with plenty of opportunities to read the time on a an analog (not a digital) clock. Maybe even buy them a watch!

Science/Social Studies News:
In social studies, students studied Martin Luther King, Jr. and his many leadership qualities. We read many biographies and made out own mini-books about his life. IN science, students have been studying weather. We learned how to read thermometers and weather charts. January proved to be a perfect month to witness the power of weather.

Holiday Boutique

Holiday Boutique is fast approaching and I really need the help of our excellent RRs. This isn't about fundraising, it's about providing a service for our amazing Stevenson kids.

Here's how you can help!
  • Work commitments allowing, I'd really appreciate it if you could all commit to working at least one hour during the Boutique. It's a fun way to volunteer as duties include helping the smaller kids pick out gifts and Christmas wrapping.
  • Could you please contact your parents and ask if any of them can also lend a hand
  • Please update your blogs about information about the Holiday Boutique. If you can include a link to the following page on the main website, that would be ideal: http://stevensonpirates.net/home/fundraisers/holiday-boutique/
